Shop Fit-Out Electrical Contractor

Quick-turnaround electrical work for shop fit-outs, from a bare shell to a unit ready to open its doors.

Shop fitting is some of the fastest-moving work in the trade. The keys arrive, the programme is short and the opening date is already on the posters. Adtec Electrical Services Ltd carries out a lot of quick-turnaround shop fitting electrical projects, working for shopfitters, main contractors and retailers. Since 2014 we have built our commercial side on turning up when we said we would, reading the drawings properly and keeping pace with the other trades on site.

What a shop fit-out usually involves

Every unit is different, but most retail fit-outs need the same core package. Lighting sets the tone of the shop: general lighting to trade by, track and spot lighting for displays, and feature pendants over counters or windows. Small power goes where the layout needs it, at tills, display units, back-of-house kitchens and stock rooms. Distribution often means a new or reorganised board sized for the new layout, with circuits clearly labelled for whoever runs the shop.

We also carry out the data cabling and patch panels for tills, card terminals, cameras and network points, leaving the equipment to be installed by a dedicated IT team. If you don't have one, we can subcontract that part too, so there is one point of contact for the whole job.

Built for quick turnarounds

On a short programme the electrical work has to fit tightly between strip-out, partitions, ceilings and the shopfitter's joinery. We agree the sequence at the start: when first fix needs to be done so ceilings can close, when containment has to be in for the ceiling grid, and when second fix and testing can happen once the fixtures are in. Our working hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm, and we plan the job within them.

Where the landlord's base build leaves a shell, we start with what is there: the incoming supply, the existing board and any wiring worth keeping. Where an earlier tenant's installation is still in place, we survey it first and tell you plainly what can stay and what has to go.

Working with shopfitters and main contractors

Much of our fit-out work comes through shopfitting companies who need an electrical subcontractor they can rely on. Send us the lighting and power layouts, the specification and the programme and we will price from them, raising questions early rather than arguing about variations later. On site we coordinate with the joiners, ceiling fixers and decorators so nobody is waiting on us. Our page for builders and developers explains how we work on contractor-led projects.

Lighting that sells the space

In a shop, lighting does more than let people see. It draws customers in from the street and shows off the stock. We install the fittings your designer or shopfitter has specified, or can suggest options if the layout is still being worked out. Our commercial lighting page covers switching zones, controls and replacement of older fittings in more detail.

Testing and handover

Before the unit opens, every new or altered circuit is tested and the appropriate certificate is issued with the schedules of test results. That paperwork matters: landlords, shopfitters and insurers all tend to ask for it. If the rest of the building's installation needs assessing too, see our commercial testing service.

How a fit-out job runs

  1. Enquiry. You send the drawings, specification and key dates, or call us to talk it through.
  2. Survey or desktop price. We visit the unit where needed, or price from the drawings.
  3. Written quote. A clear scope and price in writing, with exclusions spelt out.
  4. Installation. First fix, containment, second fix and data cabling, sequenced with the other trades.
  5. Certificate. Testing, labelling and the certificate handed over ready for opening.
