Domestic Electrical Work

Our smaller works side is for homeowners and landlords: commercial standards of care, applied to the jobs bigger firms often turn away.

For most of our history Adtec Electrical has been known to builders and businesses. Over the years, though, the homeowners, landlords and neighbours of the people we work for kept asking whether we would look at their electrics. We now run a dedicated smaller works side so those jobs get proper attention instead of being squeezed in between projects.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want something fixed, upgraded or added, from a single tripping circuit to a full rewire before moving in. Landlords and letting agents who need an electrical safety report on a rental, and someone dependable to do any remedial work it turns up. And people buying or selling who have been told the electrics need looking at before a sale goes through.

What we cover

Consumer unit upgrades

The consumer unit is what most people call the fuse box: the panel, usually under the stairs or in a cupboard, where your circuits start. Older units with wire fuses or no RCD protection are one of the most common things we replace. More on consumer unit upgrades.

Rewires

If a house still has old rubber-insulated cable, or the wiring has been extended piecemeal over decades, a full or partial rewire may be the right answer. We will tell you honestly which, and what the disruption looks like. More on rewires.

Fault finding

Lights that flicker, a circuit that keeps tripping, sockets that have gone dead. We test methodically until we find the cause, rather than swapping parts and hoping. More on fault finding.

Extra sockets, lighting and small jobs

More sockets in a home office, USB outlets by the bed, an outdoor socket for the mower, downlights in a kitchen, garden lighting. More on sockets and lighting.

Electric showers

New and replacement electric showers wired on a suitable circuit with the right protection. More on electric shower installation.

Outdoor and garden lighting

Wall lights, path and garden lighting and outdoor sockets on RCD-protected circuits. More on outdoor lighting.

Safety reports

An Electrical Installation Condition Report checks the state of the whole installation. Landlords in England need one at least every five years, and they are useful for buyers and owners of older homes too. More on EICRs.

What to expect

Call or send the form with a short description. Photos of the consumer unit and the problem help a lot. For simple jobs we may be able to give a price over the phone. For anything bigger we visit first. You get the price in writing before we start, we keep dust sheets down and the mess to a minimum, and you get the right certificate for the work when we finish.

Close to home

We keep our domestic work fairly close to our base at Lyford: Wantage, Grove, Faringdon, Abingdon, Didcot and the villages around them, plus parts of Oxford, Witney, Swindon and Newbury. See areas we cover for more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Not really. An extra socket, a new outside light or a single fault is exactly what our smaller works side is for. If it can be combined with another job on the same visit, we will suggest it.

Yes. We carry out electrical safety reports on rented homes and can come back to put right anything the report finds, so you have one firm from inspection to sign-off.

We can't promise same-day visits, but call us during office hours and we will tell you honestly how soon we can get there.

For most jobs someone needs to let us in and show us the consumer unit. Landlords can arrange access through a tenant or agent, provided we can reach every room.

For some jobs, briefly. A consumer unit change or a rewire means the house is without power for part of the day. Adding a socket usually means just one circuit is off for a short time. We will tell you beforehand.
