Electrician in Abingdon

Abingdon-on-Thames is one of the larger towns we cover, a short run up the A415 from our office at Lyford.

A town of many building ages

Abingdon claims to be one of the oldest continuously settled towns in England, and its centre shows it, with timber-framed and stone buildings near the market place, the abbey buildings and the river. Around that core are streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, then large areas of inter-war semis and the estates built between the 1950s and 1980s, plus newer housing on the northern and southern edges.

That spread makes Abingdon a varied place to work. A Victorian terrace may still have some rubber-insulated cable hiding in the loft, an inter-war semi often has a fuse board that has been patched rather than replaced, and a 1970s house may simply need RCD protection and a few more sockets to suit modern use.

Commercial property in Abingdon

Commercial work here comes from a few directions. There are business parks and industrial estates on the outskirts with offices, light industrial units and trade premises. The town centre has shops, restaurants and professional offices, many of them in older buildings. And the science and research sites in the surrounding area, such as Culham and Milton Park, support a wider ring of offices and suppliers.

For office tenants, the usual jobs are reconfiguring lighting and small power after a layout change, adding data and floor boxes, and arranging periodic testing so the landlord's and tenant's records are in order.

Getting there, and the villages around

From Lyford we head east through Marcham, and Abingdon is roughly eight miles away. Traffic around the Marcham Road and the A34 junctions can be heavy at peak times, so we plan visits outside the rush where we can.

On the way, and around the town, we also cover Marcham, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay, Radley, Kennington, Shippon and Frilford. Several of these villages have older cottages and converted barns alongside newer infill housing.

Riverside streets and older wiring

Some of the most interesting jobs around Abingdon are in the older streets close to the Thames and the town centre, where cellars, low ceilings and solid walls all affect where cables can go. In buildings like these we survey before pricing, because a route that looks simple on paper can be blocked by a beam or a stone wall once floorboards come up.

Where a house has been extended in stages, the wiring often reflects every phase: an original circuit to the front rooms, a later one for the kitchen, and a newer run to a conservatory. Testing shows how those pieces fit together. Sometimes tidying and labelling them, adding RCD protection and fixing a couple of faults is all that's needed; sometimes a partial rewire of one area makes more sense than patching it again.

For flats above shops in the centre, the arrangement of the supply can be complicated, with meters and boards for several occupants in a shared space. We check which equipment belongs to which property before starting any work.

Which of our services fit

Homeowners in Abingdon mostly call us for consumer unit replacements, rewires on older terraces and semis, extra sockets and lighting, and tracing faults that trip the RCD. The town has a lot of rented housing, so landlord EICRs are a steady part of the work. On the commercial side we take on office reconfigurations and unit fit-outs, and we carry out wiring for builders working on extensions and conversions.

Abingdon's districts and employers

Abingdon's wards include Abbey Northcourt, Caldecott, Dunmore, Fitzharris and Peachcroft, and its Town Centre, Albert Park and Northcourt conservation areas cover much of its older housing. Across the Vale of White Horse council area as a whole, Census 2021 records 36.8% of homes as detached, 15.7% privately rented and 8.3% heated only by electricity. On the commercial side, the town is home to Abingdon Science Park, where Sophos has its headquarters, the Miele UK head office and the Drayton Road Industrial Estate. Those names describe the local economy rather than our customer list, but they show the range of offices, labs and units in town.

Frequently asked questions

We plan routes under floors and through voids to keep chasing to a minimum, but some making good is normally needed. We explain what to expect in the quote so your plasterer or decorator can be booked.

Yes. We regularly reconfigure lighting and power for office layouts and can work around your opening hours to keep disruption down.

Roughly eight miles east of Lyford via Marcham. Journey time varies with traffic on the A415 and around the A34.

In England, privately rented homes need an EICR at least every five years, or sooner if the previous report says so. Tenants must be given a copy.
