Electrician in Oxford
Oxford is the biggest place we cover. Most of our work there is in rented homes, conversions and commercial buildings rather than small one-off domestic calls.
Period terraces and a lot of rented housing
Large parts of the city are made up of Victorian and Edwardian terraced and semi-detached houses: Jericho, East Oxford around the Cowley Road, Summertown and parts of Headington among them. Beyond them are inter-war suburbs and post-war estates. A high proportion of these homes are let, many as shared houses, which brings its own set of electrical needs.
Landlords need a valid EICR for every let property, renewed at least every five years, and many older houses in the city need remedial work after the first inspection: replacing old fuse boards, adding RCD protection or upgrading earthing and bonding. Larger houses being split into flats need new supplies, separate consumer units for each flat and careful planning of shared areas.
Smaller jobs in Oxford
Alongside larger projects, we take on a range of smaller domestic jobs in Oxford where they fit around our other work in the city. The ones we are asked about most are tracing a fault that keeps tripping the electrics, fitting or replacing an electric shower with the right cable and protection, and replacing an old consumer unit that has no RCD protection.
For jobs like these, it helps to tell us what is happening, roughly how old the installation is, and when you are usually in. That way we can give you a sensible idea of the work before we visit, and plan it into a day when we are already nearby.

Offices and commercial buildings
Oxford's commercial property ranges from offices in converted townhouses in the centre to modern buildings on the business parks around the ring road, such as the large park at Cowley, plus retail units, hospitality and educational buildings. Many city-centre buildings are listed or in conservation areas, so surface containment, routes and fittings are often chosen to suit the building.
Typical commercial jobs include office refits, LED lighting upgrades, additional small power and data, and periodic testing across multi-tenant buildings where the landlord needs records for the common parts.
Travelling into the city
From Lyford, Oxford is roughly fourteen miles away via the A338 and A420, or the A34. Journey times depend heavily on traffic, and parking in the city can be awkward, so we plan visits and agree loading and parking arrangements in advance.
We also cover the edges of the city and its neighbours, including Botley, Cumnor, Kennington, Kidlington, Wolvercote and Littlemore.
Shared houses, conversions and inspections
Shared houses in the city bring extra considerations beyond a standard family home. Larger houses in multiple occupation may need fire alarm systems, separate circuits for kitchens and more sockets in each bedroom, and licensing conditions from the city council can set expectations for inspection. We work with landlords and agents to plan inspections, remedial work and any upgrades so the property can stay let with minimal disruption.
When a large Victorian house is split into flats, the electrical design starts with the supply. Each new flat usually needs its own meter and consumer unit, and the common parts such as hallways and stairs need their own landlord's supply for lighting and alarms. Planning this early, alongside the builder and the network operator, avoids delays later in the project.
For commercial buildings in the centre, access is often the deciding factor. Narrow streets, shared entrances and occupied offices mean work is scheduled carefully, sometimes outside normal hours by agreement.
How we help in Oxford
For landlords and letting agents, we carry out EICRs and any remedial work found. For property owners and builders converting houses into flats, we design and install the new circuits and supplies. For businesses we handle office electrical work and commercial testing. Because of the travel involved, very small domestic jobs in the city may be better suited to a more local electrician, and we'll say so honestly.
Oxford's housing at a glance
At Oxford council-area level, Census 2021 records 32.2% of homes as privately rented and 30.8% as flats, both well above the regional pattern, while 12.1% of homes have electricity as their only heating. The city also has 18 conservation areas, among them Jericho, Osney Town, the North Oxford Victorian Suburb and Iffley. Put together, that means plenty of landlord inspections, converted houses with several supplies, and older buildings where cable routes need care.
