Electrician in Didcot

Didcot has grown fast in recent decades, and most of the work we see there comes from that growth: new homes, new offices and new units.

Railway town to garden town

Old Didcot grew up around the railway junction, and the streets near the station still have rows of late Victorian and early twentieth-century terraces. Some have been rewired well, others still carry older circuits or a consumer unit without RCD protection. Ladygrove, built from the 1980s onwards, added a large area of family homes that are now old enough for their original fuse boards to be due for replacement.

More recently, Great Western Park and the developments to the north-east of the town have brought thousands of new houses. Here the installations are modern, so the requests are about additions: an outdoor socket, garage power, lighting in a garden room, or a dedicated circuit for an electric vehicle charger.

Science parks and business units

What sets Didcot apart is the employment around it. Milton Park sits just to the west and Harwell Campus to the south-west, between them hosting a large number of offices, laboratories and technical businesses. Closer to the town centre there are retail parks, trade counters and smaller industrial units.

For commercial clients, that means office fit-outs and refits, lighting upgrades to LED, distribution boards and sub-mains for growing tenants, and the periodic inspection and testing that leases and insurers often ask for. Work in occupied buildings is planned so that shutdowns happen when they will cause the least disruption.

Distance and the surrounding villages

Didcot is roughly twelve miles east of Lyford, usually reached through Steventon and Milton. It is close enough for us to cover domestic jobs as well as commercial ones.

We also cover the villages around it, including Harwell, Blewbury, East Hagbourne, West Hagbourne, Cholsey, Milton and Sutton Courtenay, where older cottages sit beside newer estates.

Planning work around a growing town

Didcot's growth means many buildings are only a few years old, but that doesn't mean they never need an electrician. New homes often reach the point where owners want a garden room, a home office or a hot tub, and each of those needs a properly designed supply. We check the existing consumer unit has space and suitable protection, plan the cable route outside, and make sure the earthing arrangement suits equipment used outdoors.

For new office tenants, the first question is usually what the landlord's base build already provides. Some units come with lighting and a distribution board in place, others are a shell. Walking the space with the floor plan lets us price additional power, data and lighting circuits accurately, and agree which work falls to the tenant and which to the landlord.

In the older terraces around the station, we see the opposite: properties that have changed hands many times, with alterations from several decades and no paperwork, where an inspection is the right first step.

The right service for the job

In the older terraces and Ladygrove homes, consumer unit upgrades and fault finding are the most frequent calls. In new-build areas we add sockets, outdoor power and lighting. Landlords with properties near the station or the science parks need regular EICRs. And for businesses we handle office electrical work, warehouse and industrial installations, and commercial testing.

A fast-growing town in figures

Didcot's population passed 31,000 at the 2021 Census, up from just over 26,000 in 2011, and much of that growth is new housing with modern installations. At South Oxfordshire council-area level, 15.9% of homes are privately rented and 7.1% are heated by oil alone. The older parts of town are protected by three conservation areas: Didcot Old, Northbourne and Station Road. Employment land around the town falls within the Science Vale Enterprise Zone, which brings laboratory, office and industrial premises that need commercial installations and periodic testing.

Frequently asked questions

We cover businesses across the Didcot area, including the science and business parks around it. Site rules on those parks vary, so we agree access, permits and timings with the building manager first.

We can install a dedicated circuit and supply for a charger, checking first that the incoming supply and earthing arrangements are suitable.

Not automatically, but boards from that era often lack RCD protection. An inspection will show whether an upgrade is advisable and what else would need attention.

Where a shutdown would affect staff or customers, we can schedule that part of the work for early mornings or quieter periods by agreement.
