Electrician in Witney

Witney is the main market town of West Oxfordshire, north of us across the Thames, and a mix of old stone streets, big estates and industrial parks.

Cotswold stone and modern estates

The centre of Witney is built in the honey-coloured Cotswold stone typical of the area, with townhouses, cottages and former mill buildings from the town's blanket-making past. Older stone properties can be tricky to rewire: thick walls, solid floors and old timbers all limit where cables can run, so planning the route matters as much as the installation itself.

Since the 1970s, Witney has expanded enormously, with large estates to the north, west and east, including Madley Park and the newer developments to the west of the town. The earlier estates now have installations of an age where a consumer unit upgrade or a periodic inspection is often due, while the newest homes mainly need extras.

Industrial and commercial Witney

The town has a substantial industrial side, with several industrial estates and business parks around its southern and western edges. These host manufacturers, distributors, trade counters and workshops, many in portal-framed units where three-phase supplies, high-bay lighting and machine connections are the main electrical needs.

The busy high street and Market Square add shops, cafés and offices, often in older buildings where changes need to be made carefully.

Getting to Witney

Witney is roughly fourteen miles north of Lyford, usually reached via Kingston Bagpuize and the A415 through Standlake, or by the A420 and A40. That's within our normal area, though we tend to plan domestic visits there together rather than for single small tasks.

We also cover the villages around the town, such as Ducklington, Curbridge, Hailey, Standlake, Eynsham and Bampton, many of which have older stone properties and converted farm buildings.

Older homes, newer estates and outbuildings

Around Witney, many houses have outbuildings: garages, workshops, garden studios or converted stables. Supplying these properly means a correctly sized cable, buried or clipped along a suitable route, with the right protection at both ends. Older outbuilding supplies are often the cause of nuisance tripping, especially if a cable has been damaged or water has got into an outdoor fitting, so they're one of the first things we check when tracing a fault.

On the large estates built from the 1970s onwards, the original consumer units are often reaching the end of their sensible life. Upgrading one is a good moment to check the earthing and bonding, add surge protection and label every circuit clearly, so whoever next works on the installation knows exactly what they're looking at.

For businesses moving into an industrial unit, we can survey the existing distribution, confirm what the supply can support and plan any new machine or charger connections before the move.

Matching the service to the property

For older stone homes and cottages, careful rewires and consumer unit upgrades are the most common work. For the larger estates, it's consumer units, extra sockets, lighting and EICRs for rented homes. For industrial premises we install distribution boards, three-phase power, lighting and containment, and we carry out periodic testing for businesses that need it.

Blankets, conservation and modern estates

Witney's long association with blanket making is still visible: the Blanket Hall dates from 1721, and production carried on until 2002, after which the former Early's factory site was developed into housing estates. The Witney and Cogges Conservation Area protects the historic centre around it. Census 2021 figures for the West Oxfordshire council area put private renting at 17.9%, with 10.1% of homes heated by oil only and 9.0% by electricity only, which makes sound circuits for heating and hot water a regular concern in the outlying villages.

Frequently asked questions

Thick stone walls limit the options, so we look at floor voids, roof spaces and existing routes first, and use surface containment where it's neater. We'll explain the trade-offs before quoting.

Yes. We handle three-phase supplies, distribution boards, machine connections, lighting and containment in industrial and warehouse units.

Roughly fourteen miles north of our office at Lyford, depending on the route taken.

Ring us first. For very small jobs we may suggest grouping them, or tell you honestly if a more local electrician would be better value.

Yes. We size the cable for the expected load, choose a safe route whether buried or clipped, and fit suitable protection at both ends. The new circuit is notifiable work, so it is tested and certified on completion.
