Electrician in Wantage
Our office at Lyford Business Centre is a short drive north of the town centre, which makes Wantage the place we can reach most quickly.
Wantage homes and their wiring
The middle of Wantage is an old market town, laid out around the square with the statue of King Alfred. The streets running off it hold Georgian and Victorian townhouses, brick terraces and a scattering of converted shops and flats above businesses. Many of these buildings have been rewired at least once, but often decades ago, and it is common to open a consumer unit and find circuits that were added by different people at different times with no records left behind.
Further out you reach the post-war and 1960s to 1980s estates, where the original wiring is usually PVC cable that is still serviceable, but the fuse boards often pre-date modern RCD protection. On the eastern edge the large Crab Hill development and other recent schemes have added hundreds of new homes, which tend to need additions such as garden sockets, outside lighting or a circuit for an EV charger rather than repairs.
Businesses in and around town
Wantage has a working industrial side as well as its shops. There are trade counters, workshops and small manufacturing units on the estates at the edge of town, and the technology and business parks at nearby Grove bring offices and laboratories into the mix. Small units change hands regularly, and a new tenant usually wants the lighting, power and data reorganised before moving in.
Town-centre premises bring their own challenges: shops, cafés and offices in listed or older buildings, where new containment has to be run discreetly and where the supply and the distribution board may be shared with flats upstairs.

How close we are
Lyford sits roughly four miles north of Wantage, so a visit to the town is usually a matter of minutes rather than a planned trip. That matters most for small domestic jobs, where a second visit to fit a part or finish testing is easy to arrange. It also means we can respond quickly when a builder we are working with on a Wantage project needs us back on site.
We also cover the villages around the town, including Grove, Letcombe Regis, Letcombe Bassett, Childrey, East Hendred, Ardington, Steventon and Charney Bassett. Many of these have older stone cottages and farm buildings, where cable routes need planning so walls and beams aren't damaged.
Typical questions from Wantage households
A lot of calls from the town start with a fuse board that keeps tripping, often in a house where an older board has had an RCD added at some point and every circuit now shares it. In those cases we trace which circuit is leaking, fix the cause, and then talk through whether a replacement board with individual protection per circuit would stop the problem coming back.
Another common request comes from people buying or selling in the market town. A buyer's survey may recommend an electrical inspection, and an Electrical Installation Condition Report gives a clear record of what is safe, what needs attention soon and what can wait. If remedial work follows, we price it separately so the seller and buyer can see exactly what is involved.
Extensions and loft conversions are also popular across the town's older streets, and those usually mean new circuits, which are notifiable work. Getting the electrician involved early, before the plasterboard goes up, keeps the cost down and the finish neat.
Services that suit Wantage properties
For the older terraces and townhouses, consumer unit upgrades, partial or full rewires and fault finding are the most common requests. Landlords letting flats in the town centre need an Electrical Installation Condition Report at least every five years. For businesses we handle unit fit-outs, office lighting and power, and periodic testing, and for local builders we carry out extension and refurbishment wiring from first fix through to certification.
Wantage in the numbers
Wantage shares our own OX12 postcode, and the figures for the wider Vale of White Horse council area (Census 2021) say a lot about local homes: 36.8% are detached, 15.7% are privately rented and 8.3% rely on electricity alone for heating. In town, the Wantage Town Centre and Wantage - Charlton conservation areas protect the older streets, with further conservation areas at Grove and the Letcombes. Newer housing has gone up beside the A338 towards Oxford and on brownfield land near the Letcombe Brook, and more large developments are planned for Wantage and Grove, so first-fix work for builders and additions for new owners will keep growing.
