Electrician in Carterton
Carterton is a West Oxfordshire town next to RAF Brize Norton, about 20 miles from our base at Lyford.
A 20th-century town
Unlike most towns we cover, Carterton is largely modern. Its biggest change came with RAF Brize Norton, where construction began in 1935. In 1967 the town expanded sharply: the Upavon Way ring road was laid out and more than 1,450 RAF homes were built, along with about 300 private houses. By 2011 the population was 15,769.
That history shapes the electrics. A large share of Carterton's housing was built between the 1960s and 1980s, with installations that were sound when new but now often have consumer units without full RCD protection, few sockets for modern use, and earthing that pre-dates current standards.
Upgrading 1960s to 1980s installations
In homes of this age, the PVC wiring itself is usually still serviceable, so a full rewire is not always needed. The more common job is a consumer unit upgrade: we test each circuit first, correct any faults found, and fit a new board with RCD protection. If testing shows problems with the cables, we explain what we found and quote for the circuits that need replacing.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a good starting point if you've just bought a house in one of the 1960s estates and don't know its history.

Rented homes in the town
Census 2021 figures for West Oxfordshire show 17.9% of homes privately rented across the district. Landlords letting in Carterton North East, North West or South need an EICR at least every five years. On these properties we look closely at the age of the board, the condition of accessories after previous tenancies and the earthing and bonding.
Extensions and new circuits
Many Carterton houses have room to extend, and kitchen extensions, garage conversions and loft rooms are common. New circuits are notifiable work, and adding them to an older installation is often what prompts a consumer unit upgrade. We work with your builder from first fix to final certification.
Off the main roads such as Alvescot Road and Black Bourton Road, and in villages nearby, homes off the gas grid may use oil or electric heating. District-level Census 2021 figures show 10.1% of homes heated by oil only and 9.0% by electricity only, which increases the load on the installation.
Nearby villages
We also cover the surrounding villages, including Alvescot, Shilton and Black Bourton, where the Alvescot and Shilton conservation areas protect older stone buildings. Our main services for the area are consumer unit upgrades, EICRs and extension wiring.
